Introduction
Diabetes care is complicated, involving a wide range of services. The Stephanie Marks Appeal seeks to update the way diabetes is currently handled by providing a central resource centre based on the St Peter’s site, serving a catchment area of 450,000 people.
- The Stephanie Marks Appeal was launched in June 2003 to significantly raise awareness of diabetes and to meet the growing demand for diabetes care
- It is predicated that three million people in the UK will have diabetes by 2010 - with your help our goal to create a ”Centre of Excellence” for diabetes is achievable
- The proposed service will look to provide a specialist centre housing treatment, education and research facilities
- A modern network will provide faster communication in areas of diabetes healthcare delivery; shared electronic records, auditing, patient identification, patient advice, and practice support, clearly providing a balance between community and specialist care
- The project is directed by a group of committee members working closely with three local Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) North Surrey, Surrey Heath & Woking and Hounslow.
- The new centre is to be built within the grounds of St. Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey.
- Rather than a new build as initially budgeted for, in 2007 the Appeal was allocated an existing building on the St. Peter's site. Building work will commence on reaching 800k.
”As a Trust we aspire to lead in diabetes care. A specialist diabetes centre will provide rapidly accessed high quality service to all people with diabetes. This resource will provide immediate care and ongoing education, leading to true patient empowerment”
