The Stephanie Marks Appeal received its largest single donation to date when £36,180 was presented by The Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Martin Schofield at the end of his year of office. Sue Marks, Stephanie's mother, beamed as she visualized her daughter's dream move one step closer to reality. The incoming Mayor, Cllr Graham Winton and Avril Surridge, member of the Stephanie Marks Appeal committee member and chair of Diabetes UK St. Peter's and District Group also attended the presentation which took place on Monday 23rd May, in the recently refurbished reception area at St. Peter's Hospital, Chertsey.
Glenn Douglas, chief executive of Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust receiving the cheque on behalf of the Stephanie Marks Appeal, said: "We feel very privileged to have been adopted as one of the Mayor's charities. Martin has worked tirelessly during his term of office to raise funds through his impressive and varied programme of fundraising activities. Not only has this given us a huge financial boost but he has also helped raise our profile throughout the community. We are extremely grateful and we want to thank him sincerely for all his support."
The Worshipful the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Elmbridge have attended around 300 official engagements during their term of office. Cllr Schofied, who himself has diabetes, had "Good Health and Well-Being of the Borough" as the theme for his term of office. He commented, "I believe this is a very important issue and I am delighted that I could do something constructive to support such a worthwhile cause. I am going to attend the next Appeal committee meeting which will give me the chance to continue my support."
The Stephanie Marks Appeal aims to revolutionise diabetes care by building the first 'hub and spoke' system of diabetes care in England with a dedicated Diabetes Resource Centre in the grounds of St. Peter's Hospital, Chertsey. This main "centre of excellence" or hub will be linked by a sophisticated IT network to satellite clinics throughout the Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals catchment area.
