Members of North West Surrey Synagogue have donated £4,428.63 to the Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal.
The money has been raised as part of the Weybridge based Synagogues annual High Holyday Appeal organized by Derick Hallé, Chairman North West Surrey Synagogue Tzedakah (Charity) Group. Money raised from the appeal is donated to three causes - a local Jewish cause, a local non-Jewish cause and thirdly to a fund in Israel. Synagogue members indicate how they want their donation used.
In the past the Synagogue has supported Princess Alice Hospice, the Field of Hope cancer appeal, and the Mayor's Charity appeal. Several years ago a beneficiary was the Hospital School at St. Peter's Hospital.
Commenting Rabbi Jacqueline Tabick, the first woman Rabbi in Great Britain, said: "North West Surrey Synagogue members are grateful for all the facilities offered to the local community by Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals. We are delighted to contribute to this very worthy cause and the Stephanie Marks Appeal has sparked a great deal of interest amongst our members."
North West Surrey is a Reform Synagogue with a membership of around 300 families. It serves a very wide catchment area which in many ways mirrors that of Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals - Woking, Staines, Walton, Weybridge, Hersham, Chertsey, Addlestone - with members travelling from as far away as Reigate and Virginia Waters.
Thanking Synagogue members for their donation, Clive Thompson CBE, Chairman of Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We are very grateful to Synagogue members for their magnificent donation. Support from the community served by our two hospitals has been superb and we are now seeking corporate sponsorship so that we can get the foundations laid for the Stephanie Marks Diabetes Resource Centre."
