Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher on Saturday, 12 February 2005

Love is in the air so celebrate in style by joining the Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of Elmbridge, Councillor Martin Schofield, at the Valentine's Charity Ball in aid of the Mayor's Charity Appeal on behalf of Asthma UK, Stephanie Marks Appeal and The Mayor of Elmbridge Trust Fund. Tickets are £50 per head which include a reception drink, a three course meal (a vegetarian option available) and dancing till 1.00 a.m. to the Perry Parsons Big Band.

The Stephanie Marks Appeal was launched in the summer of 2003 - 12 months after 17-year-old Stephanie died just days after completing her AS levels. She had been a Type1 insulin dependent youngster for six years and had been under the care of the Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust.

As a tribute to their daughter, Sue and Chris Marks, together with the Trust, launched a £2.5 million Appeal to build and equip a dedicated Diabetes Resource Centre in the grounds of St Peter's Hospital.

The Resource Centre, together with a network of satellite clinics, will provide treatment, education and research facilities and serve as a focal point for patients, carers and medical professionals. Diabetes is the fourth main cause of death in most developed countries. The amount of people faced with the condition is growing and by 2010, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust will be looking to treat approx 20,000 Diabetes sufferers.

Elmbridge Mayor, Councillor Martin Schofield, has "Good Health and Well-Being of the Borough" as the theme for his term of office. In line with his aims, The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal will be one of two main beneficiaries of the Mayor's charity appeal. The Mayor will continue to raise money on behalf of the Mayor of Elmbridge Trust Fund ensuring that, there is assistance on hand for local residents in times of severe need.

Contact Val Marks at The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal Fundraising Office on 01932-722330 or val.levy@asph.nhs.uk. Please make cheques payable to The Mayor's Charity Fund.
