Enjoy this Halloween extravaganza for all the family. Everyone will be in Halloween costume and you will have the chance to taste a fabulous selection of wines and cider, completely free. The festivities will go on from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday, 29 October at Victoria Wine Company, 58 High Street, Weybridge next door to Waitrose. Try your luck in the raffle and have a go at apple bobbing for some great prizes.
Pat, who manages the Victoria Wine shop in Weybridge, explains the background to the Extravaganza, ”It was my daughter Samantha’s idea really, and she was the main inspiration behind the day!! I’ve just been diagnosed with Diabetes which was a complete shock. My eye sight deteriorated very quickly, one day it was fine and the next it was very blurred. I was also tired, I’d lost weight and I was extremely thirsty – but I put these symptoms down to hard work and my hectic lifestyle. There was no family history of Diabetes, so that was the last thing on my mind when a simple blood test revealed extremely high blood glucose levels. I was comforted by the excellent care I received from my GP at Weybridge Health Centre where alarmingly they are diagnosing one case of Diabetes each week. My condition is now well managed and under control. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for a close friend of Sam’s who died of Diabetes. So we decided to do something positive to make people aware of how serious Diabetes can be. The extravaganza will raise money for the charity The Stephanie Marks Appeal who wants to improve the quality of Diabetes care for people in North Surrey and Outer London.”
The amount of people faced with diabetes is growing and by 2010, Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Trust will be looking to treat well over 24,000 with the condition. To meet this growing demand not only by way of treatment, but also by providing educational and research facilities, The Stephanie Marks Appeal was launched in June 2003. It aims to significantly raise awareness of the condition and provide a new dedicated diabetes centre on the St Peter’s site that will serve the entire catchment area of Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust.
