21/04/06Living with Diabetes Day – We Are What We Eat Main MenuDownload

We are what we eat!!

All will be revealed at the ”Living with Diabetes Day”

The GI diet is everywhere, with celebrity and media endorsements. Is ”Kylie” right? Or is Glycaemic Index just the latest diet fad? Alun Willis, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust will go through the history of GI, explain how it is currently being used and answer the question ”should you follow GI?”. If you have diabetes; there a family history of the condition, or you simply want to know more, these and many other questions will be answered at the Living with Diabetes Day, sponsored by Sanofi-Aventis, at Sir William Perkins’s School, Chertsey on Saturday, 20th May. Registration is from 09.30 am and the programme of talks, demonstrations and exhibitions addressing all aspects of diabetes will run until around 4.30 pm.

Controlling your weight can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Enjoy watching Steve Acton an Executive Chef with Cater Link as he creates a selection of culinary delights suitable for people with diabetes, that are healthy yet appetizing. He will demonstrate how to make an ”energizer smoothie” using fresh fruit and wheat germ yogurt; teach you how easy it is to create bran and berry Muffins; prepare a quick, yet nourishing ”stir fry” using soba noodles and finally show you how to impress your family and friends by making a ”spiced couscous salad” with chick peas and sweet potatoes. He has also promised to give out samples of each!!!

Steve comments, ”Cater Link is committed to preparing fresh food and encouraging healthy eating. To Cater Link, cooking is an art form and The Living with Diabetes Day will give me the opportunity to demonstrate ways of combining ingredients to create healthy yet tasty meals. This is something we do on a daily basis since our foundation in 1993, for school children across the country with our ”whole plate meal approach”. These are balanced dishes with the right proportion of starch, fibre and protein.

Diabetes is a complex condition which affects all ages. This is your opportunity to listen to the experts, chat with others in similar situations, visit the exhibitions offering a wide selection of products, services and advice and have your questions answered.

Places are limited to 300 and booking in advance is advisable. Whilst children are welcome to attend the talks and demonstration, there will be a Kids Club on-site run by the Chertsey Playscheme for children aged 5 -12, allowing parents, carers and grandparents the opportunity to listen to the presentations and visit the exhibitors. Adults £6, Senior Citizens £4, Kids Club £5. A hot and cold lunch is available. Ring 01932 722330 or e-mail val.levy@asph.nhs.uk or download an application form from the Stephanie Marks website www.stephaniemarks.org.uk
