This once in a lifetime opportunity was auctioned by The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal, to which Ian Botham OBE is Patron. The Appeal will help to provide a unique model of diabetes care by creating a specialist diabetes centre, linked via technology to community hospitals and GP surgeries throughout North Surrey and Outer London. The new centre will house treatment, education and research facilities, located within the grounds of St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey, Surrey. Diabetes is a cause close to both Ian's hearts as each of their respective daughters has lived with diabetes for many years.
Supported by many of the local businesses in Jersey, the package included flights courtesy of Channel Islands Travel Service (www.jerseytravel.com), dinner, bed and breakfast at the Premier Hotel Cristina - boasting one of the finest views in Jersey, courtesy of Dolan Hotels (www.dolanhotels.com), and Classic Cars who arranged transfers to and from the hotel to the Royal Jersey Golf Club (www.clubclasscars.com). "Jersey is a wonderful island and a tremendous venue for such an event. Our sincere thanks to the local companies for their tremendous support," explains Val Marks, Fundraising Manager, The Stephanie Marks Appeal. "We hope that that the Appeal will ultimately help to improve diabetes care and awareness of the condition far further a field than Surrey".
Ian Botham OBE, Patron of the Appeal says, "Diabetes is of growing concern. It is a complex condition that affects all ages. We have had first hand experience of diabetes as my daughter Becky has lived with the condition since the age of 9. I am delighted that money raised from this auction will take the Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal one step closer to building and equipping a dedicated diabetes resource centre in Surrey."
