Diabetes Testing Day Helps Raise Awareness Of This Escalating Condition

Tuesday 14th November 2006 marks World Diabetes Day - the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. It was first introduced in 1991 in response to concern over the escalating incidence of diabetes around the world. Since then, it has grown in popularity and now unites more than 350 million people in over 130 countries all over the world including opinion leaders, health-care professionals, carers, people with diabetes, diabetes associations and the general public. More than 200 million people worldwide have diabetes. Many of them do not receive the care that they need. The lnternational Diabetes Federation has chosen 2006 as the year of the disadvantaged and the vulnerable. With the slogan 'Diabetes Care for Everyone', the World Diabetes Day 2006 campaign aims to raise awareness of communities and groups in both developed and developing countries that experience difficulties in accessing optimal healthcare because they are outside the healthcare system, or for some reason are less likely to access or are less aware of the services available to them.

A key objective for The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal (a local charity formed in 2003 covering Middlesex and Surrey) is to raise awareness of this escalating condition. The charity, sponsored by Bayer Healthcare, will be holding a Diabetes Testing Day in the Elmsleigh Shopping Centre, Staines, on Tuesday 14th November from 10:30am-3:30pm. This is an ideal opportunity for people of all ages to pop along to learn more about the condition. Trained nurses will be on hand to conduct a simple finger prick blood test to give the all clear, or advise whether there is a need to visit your GP for further checks. Diabetes can lead to long term health problems and it is therefore important to catch it in the early stages. There will also be a fabulous opportunity to win a selection of prizes on the day in the raffle. Winning tickets will be drawn at 3:30pm on the day.

Construction of the Diabetes Resource Centre is now underway and is scheduled to be completed in the Autumn 2009.

Official fundraising for the Appeal has now stopped but donations are still welcome and needed to support patient education and materials. Please send your cheque payable to "The Stephanie Marks Appeal" to Janet Booker, Cashier, St. Peter's Hospital (telephone 01932 722334).
