National Diabetes Week takes a huge step forward with a breakfast fun run led by Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Webb
Around 20 runners and walkers joined Olympic Golf Medalist Sarah Webb at a breakfast fun run/walk at the weekend to mark the start of National Diabetes Week. The event was organised and hosted by David Lloyd, Brooklands to raise money for The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal.
Sarah, who is a professional sailor and is currently in the early stages of her campaign to repeat her gold medal winning performance in Athens in the 2004 Olympics, generously interrupted her training regime to support The Stephanie Marks Diabetes Appeal. She commented, "It is brilliant to be able to support such a worthwhile local cause and get National Diabetes Week off to a running start. There was a great atmosphere at the club and it's lovely to see people get fit and help the Appeal at the same time.
Staff at David Lloyd, Brooklands organised the route, which covered the area around the Weybridge club including the Heights, and positioned marshals to keep participants safe. One of their Personal Trainers led a warm up for runners and walkers and those who took part were rewarded for their efforts with a delicious complimentary breakfast of fresh fruit and croissants and Danish pastries. Aileen Caird, PR Manager for David Lloyds, Brooklands commented, "We originally got involved with the charity when the Appeal was first launched two years ago. It is very gratifying to see the progress they have made in a relatively short time and we are delighted to support such a worthwhile local campaign."
The Stephanie Marks Appeal aims to revolutionise diabetes care by building the first 'hub and spoke' system of diabetes care in England with a dedicated Diabetes Resource Centre in the grounds of St. Peter's Hospital, Chertsey. This main "centre of excellence" or hub will be linked by a sophisticated IT network to satellite clinics throughout the Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals catchment area.
